In the Top Alcohol Funny Car category local favorite Tim Stevens from Dorr was up against Indiana's Mick Snyder. A quick 3.652-second elapsed time in the final round made Snyder the winner on US 131¹s 1/8th mile track.
Earlier, US 131 race officials had shortened Saturday's races to the 1/8th mile length as a safety measure due to the high winds that plagued the event.
Robin Samsel, from Marion, Indiana, defeated Michigan's Jeff Bohr in one of the closest final rounds of the evening, 3.600 seconds to 3.655 seconds, to win the Top Alcohol Dragster title. A pair of Daves from Northwestern Indiana, Dave Hill and Dave Hirata, were the semifinalists in the popular TAD category.
Randy Adler, from Illinois, drove his 2006 Pontiac GTO to the Pro Modified crown by defeating Mike Moran from Taylor, Michigan. Moran's Monte Carlo, one of the few turbocharged Pro Modified entries, has been running more consistent lately and his final round appearance is proof of his recent improvements.
Kokomo, Indiana's Tex Cooper, a crowd favorite at US 131 because of his smoky burnouts, suffered a catastrophic transmission failure in the Supercharged Thunder final round. That gave the win to Milan, Ohio's Al Lee.
Earlier, Lee had been the number one qualifier in this category and he drove his car all the way to the final to face Cooper.
In the local Lane Automotive Bracket Racing Series competition, Rusty Baad from Kalamazoo defeated Dorr resident Chuck Stirdivant to win the VP Racing Fuels Top ET crown while Jeff Sossoman's nearly perfect run outlasted Doug Tein in the Extreme Salon Modified ET class. Mike DeVries from Hamilton was the final winner of the evening as his Camaro defeated the Chevrolet S10 pickup of Caledonia's Tony Whitehead, Jr. Matthew Laws of Mattawan defeated Chantielle Suggs of Union City in the Beginner Jr. Dragster while Samantha Coe of Cadillac defeated Brandon Ryno of St. Joseph in the Advanced Jr. Dragster division. |
