A true sign that spring has sprung at US 131 Motorsports Park are the National City Thunder Nationals slated for Saturday, May 9th. The professional racers that will be on hand for this 2009 kickoff event include several IHRA and NHRA national event winners as well as class champions.
The popular Pro Modified class will give fans a chance to see the first side-by-side sub six-second run in history at US 131 as Mike Moran in the world’s quickest and fastest turbo-charged entry will face young Jason Hampstra coming off his first ADRL win last month in Georgia. Two-time IHRA Pro Stock Champion Pete Berner will also be on hand to show what his massive 820 cubic inch Pro Stock can do on the fastest track in Michigan.
The winner and runner-up of the NHRA Division 3 points race in Indianapolis, Bob Martin and Mick Snyder, will again compete head-to-head in Funny Car. Snyder set the track record at US 131 at 5.58 seconds last year.
Other Funny Car entries include the Amalie Oil sponsored alligator car driven by current IHRA Top Fuel racer Terry McMillen of Elkhart, Ind.
The smell of nitro will fill the air as three of the Alcohol Dragsters will be burning Nitro Methane in their injected/nitro combinations. Spectators will enjoy the sights and sounds of the $22 per gallon “horsepower in a can” nitro fueled dragsters.
In addition to this terrific line up of professional racers the Super Charger Thunder will also be running as they please the crowds with their wild and smoky burnouts.
These cars ranging from 1920’s-1950’s body styles are as impressive as modern day racecars.
Fans have come to expect the spectacular jet-powered vehicles that US 131 provides at feature shows. This year we will not disappoint our fans as Scott Shockley will be piloting the Super Shockwave, a twin engine powered ’57 Chevy pickup truck.
The Lane Automotive/Edelbrock Bracket Racing Series will also be conducted where racers are vying for the US 131Motorsports Park Championship. This will be the first race in the 13-race series to determine track champions and qualifiers for the IHRA Team Finals.
